Alan Docter

Mr. Docter is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chairman of the Board of Traxys International, which is one of the world’s leading traders of specialty metals, including uranium. Traxys is privately owned, with the majority of shares held by the Carlyle Group and Moore Capital, and 20% owned by Traxys senior management, including Mr. Docter. As measured by annual gross revenue of over $6 billion, Traxys is among the world’s top five metals traders.

Mr. Docter obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from New York University in French Literature. In order to make ends meet, immediately after graduating from college he took a job as the mail clerk for Continental Metals, a large metals trading firm located in New York City. At the suggestion of Continental’s President, Mr. Docter worked his way up through the organization and became one of its most successful traders.

In the mid 1970’s, Mr. Docter recognized that the Soviet Union was a leading producer of specialty metals, many of which were then in very short supply. He convinced the Continental board of directors to allow him to travel to the Soviet Union where he concluded the first ever contract for the purchase of titanium between a US company and the USSR’s trading company RosnoExport, and its subsidiary Techsnabexport. The contract was based on a handshake and during the remainder of the 1970’s and throughout the 1980’s, Mr. Docter expanded his relationships in the Soviet Union, despite numerous political disagreements between the USSR and USA during the same time. In all of his contracts with Soviet metals producers, Mr. Docter relied on the personal relationships he established and trusted in the integrity of his trading partners.

As a result of this strategy, and a focus on long-term trends in metals’ pricing, Alan Docter established himself as leading buyer of specialty metals, including metals from the USSR. In 1986, he founded Considar Metals, which later merged with Hochschild Partners in 1999 and then, finally, Sogem to form Traxys International in 2003. Traxys began trading uranium in 2007, when Kevin Smith of Evolution Markets joined the company as the Director of Uranium Marketing & Trading. Since that time Traxys has established itself as a leading trader U3O8. In addition to providing creative financing mechanisms for both buyers and sellers of uranium, Traxys was the first company to commit to purchase excess uranium inventories from the US Department of Energy.
